  • Dust Her Off and Take Her for a Spin

After watching about three or four different people on youtube giving tutorials on "How to Get Flawless Skin," or "Make up Made Easy," I suddenly developed a self loathing and a sense of insecurity. I don't have a 10 minute video on "(Insert "Girly How-To" Here). I don't have skills like Kandee the Make up Artist and I don't possess easy hair style secrets that I can share with the world.

OH, but I DO HAVE BLOGGING, and BLOGGING I WILL DO!

That is about the time that I jumped back on the Xanga wagon and dusted off TouretteCheryl so that I could take her for a spin. (Whoa, I think I am allowed to say that, right?)

Ironically, my last entry was about a year ago and about a very self centered day. (Aren't all my days inadvertantly self centered? Oh, nevermind, that's not my point.)

Today was one of those "Best Friend Days" as well. I think it's code for: I am in a codependent marriage. LOL. When I asked my husband if we were co dependent, he looked up from the television set and into my eyes and said, "I wouldn't know why any couple wouldn't be."

Profound. If you're married, your life really does depend on your partner. It should at least. A marriage would be sad if two people wanted to be apart and independent. In fact, any relationship would be.

Anyhow, back to how today was kind of a Best Friend Day.

Best Friend Day on a Budget

    Slept in

Woke Up Lazily and ate leftovers (that was me)

Changed into my work out clothes because that was the only way I was going to get Bill to get serious about running the stairs at the Convention Center.

Got Bill to change into work out clothes.

Walked to the Convention Center, all the while saying how we should work out more.

    Raced up the stairs.

Reached the top, self loathing ensued.

Saw the beautiful harbor and self loathing subsided.

After our work out, Bill and I do what we always do for entertainment- we went grocery shopping. We made a Cobb Salad together. He barbequed turkey while I boiled eggs and prepared the salad. This is Best Friend Day, one year later. :)

I'll take that over a youtube tutorial anyday.

  • Coming back to Cali, to Cali...

Couple of things occured this past week that caused me reflect on life in the beautiful Southern California. One: my husband and I returned from our 3 week vacation from Hawaii, Two: we visited with our missionary friend from Thailand, and Three: it was the first day of summer.

Our return from Hawaii sparked many emotions. Coming home from a long vacation is similar to walking into a room full of strangers; you never know what quite to expect. Luckily we made our adjustments back to work quite well and, with an added bonus, gained a new perspective on life. California is highly comparable to Hawaii with a few minor improvements. Clean beaches with operable public bathrooms, nicely paved roads, healthy food options and some of the most attractive people in the world. Not to mention that the weather is phenomenal in San Clemente. Leaving one paradise for another was not hard to do.

Our missionary friend from Thailand is a story in herself. She is French Canadian, mother of at least 4 children, and sees everything through the eyes of a child- with wonder and excitement. Her love for both Jesus and Southern California is unavoidably contagious. Seeing her on Tuesday and hearing her boast of her swell day in Laguna instantly reminded me of how grateful I am to live here.

    HI PAT!!

With summer starting, people are moving. People seem to come alive during the summer months! We get out of the caves where we've been hiding in and snap out of our waking stupor. Well, I guess I can only speak for myself on that one.

Parties, birthdays, beach days, summer movies, it might even become more work to have fun with so many activities to plan.

All in all, I couldn't resist sharing my epiphanies on the luxuries and perks of SoCal lifestyle. I think I might even be able to look past the "self improvement surgeries" and money-centric ideologies. Because it's really good to be back. Boy, is it.

  • I could get used to this..

We are a week into our Hawaiian vacation. We've been to the beach 3 out of 5 days, tasted every type of Asian and Island food, snorkeled with fish and got up close and personal with turtles. Talk about paradise.

Our day starts at about 5:30 am. I do my quiet time for about an hour, sitting outside on the lanai, listening to the noises of the neighborhood waking up. Bill makes Kona Mountain coffee and sets up his office. I put in 10 minutes of my Pilates Work Out tape. We both work for a couple of hours and then our real day begins.

We pack the cooler with ice cold drinks and some poke salad, grease up on sunscreen, and head out to the beaches that await us.

I could really get used to this.

Strangely enough, both Bill and I both agree that Hawaii is a very spiritual place. Looking out at such beauty and peaceful nature, one can't help but to praise God for His wonderful works.

Yesterday, we spent some time being lazy at the beach. We hiked up and down the coastline and focused on the warm water and the sweet ocean melodies. Not far into our hike, a woman pointed out that there were a dozen or so turtles near the shoreline. We paused, stared out to the glossy waters and sure enough spotted these beautiful seaturtles. I was stunned. I was absolutely taken back by such calming beauty. The turtles swayed with the flow of the current without struggle. Every now and again they would bob their heads up above the water for air. For some serene moments, Bill and I just stared at these beuatiful sea creatures. They were so docile and zen-like that I couldn't help but be intrigued. It wasn't for another five minutes that I realized that I had been holding my breath the whole time.

That's what Hawaii does to a person, it takes your breath away.

What I've really enjoyed the most out of this trip is the fact that we're returning to the bare basics. I'm letting go of a lot of life stresses and really getting in touch with my core being. Sounds a little pretentious and new age, I know-but what can I say, I've gotten a lot of sun and salt water!

    Aloha, everybody!
